Best Book This Year - The Culture Code

Quick post to let you know that I've just finished reading a fantastic book - best I've read in quite a while.

The Culture Code

by Daniel Coyle

Find it on Amazon

You really must read it if you fit any of the following:

1. you work in a culture you don't like and want to understand why

2. you are struggling to influence people

3. you don't like the culture in your organization and want to change it

3. you are starting a company, new team, etc. and want to establish a great culture

4. you enjoy well-written, easy to read and impactful books that help you be a better person, leader, spouse, parent, child, etc.

My key takeaways (among many more):

1. all of the key things to do to create "safety" are common sense - but seldom well practiced together - it should be a conscious effort at first that becomes second nature once you've created the right environment

2. vulnerability (real, genuine and honest vulnerability) is critical and will feel uncomfortable once achieved and must be embraced

3. purpose must be established in common, must be genuine and compelling

4. "hokey" stuff - the kind that outsiders view as "cultish" or "weird" is a symptom of great culture...so develop catch phrases, organizational lore, artifacts and symbols
